Description
This informative, hands-on 5-day course fulfils the competencies set out in the PHEM skills framework at descriptor level D and aligns with nationally agreed standards for prehospital emergency care. This course provides the knowledge and practical skills needed to deal with a range of prehospital emergency care situations.
The Qualsafe First Response Emergency Care (Level 3 RQF) is aimed at those requiring a recognised entry level qualification for event medicine and ambulance operations. This is the minimum qualification required to join #TeamECS as a First Responder.
Important Information
Learners must be at least 17 years old on the first day of the training. There are no other formal entry requirements but to benefit from the learning we advise that Learners have a minimum of Level 2 in literacy or equivalent and a basic understanding of first aid.
Candidates will need to dress in appropriate safe clothing and footwear for the course.
Please note that refreshments are available, however lunch is not provided during the course.
2025 FREC 3 Syllabus Update:
As of October 2025 the ECS Education Centre is approved to offer optional 'Extended Skills’ modules as part of the updated Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Response Emergency Care (FREC 3) qualification.
· Use of Supraglottic Airway Devices
· Administration of Inhaled analgesia (Nitrous Oxide/ Penthrox)
· Administration of Naloxone
· Blood Glucose Measurement
These modules are subject to clinical governance authorisation, and only available upon request from eligible* candidates. Authourised requests must be submitted to the ECS Education Team at least two weeks in advance of the course start date:

Eligibility
The FREC 3 is an ideal qualification for those working or volunteering in roles where they may be first on scene at an emergency such as those working at Events, Door Supervisors and Security Guards or high risk environments including manufacturing and agricultural settings.
For those with further ambitions, this qualification also forms the first step towards a career in pre-hospital care.
A special note on ‘Extended Skills’ Eligibility:
Only Learners who have clinical direction and operate within a governance framework are able to be taught and assessed using the FREC®3 Optional practical assessment (Extended skills). Learners must submit a completed FREC3 Optional Practical Assessments (Extended Skills) authorisation form at least one week prior to the course start date.

Pre-Course Preperation
Pre-course reading is an essential component of successfully delivering the course programme. You will be provided with learning materials ie; a manual which will be shipped to you at least 10 days before the course date if not earlier.
Course Content
The Qualsafe First Response Emergency Care (Level 3 RQF) covers topics such as:
Roles and Responsibilities of a First Responder
Structured A-E approach to the assessment of both medical and trauma patient presentations
Management of Major Illnesses and Trauma, including life-threatening bleeding control and airway management
Administration of Emergency Oxygen

Assessment methods in this course include :
6 x practical assessments/skills tests
1 x theory assessment (Multiple choice question paper)
1 x invigilated exam
Successful learners will receive a personalised Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Response Emergency Care (RQF) e-Certificate immediately after their results have been submitted. This qualification is valid for 3 years. The Learner needs to retake the qualification and the assessments before the end of the 3 years to remain qualified.
